Getting your little one to sleep could be easy, in which case, count your blessings, or difficult (as in my case). There is a lot of advice out there. What it comes down to is common sense and consistency. This is not as easy as it sounds. When you're so tired and you don't think you can listen to another moment of crying or whinning, it is very easy to give into comforting your little one any way that works; even when it will bite you in the end.
So this is what I am faced with right now. She is eight months old and does not sleep through the night. This is getting progressively more difficult as I am going back to work and getting more consistent shut eye is essential to earn a living.
The parenting websites all say pretty much the same things:
-Consistency is key. Keep bedtime and nap time at the same time as much as possible. Your baby will thank you.
- Put your baby to bed when she is drowsy, but still awake.
- Maintain a bedtime/sleeptime routine and follow it.
- Let baby know that daytime is for activity and night time is for sleep.
- Share the nighttime/sleeptime parenting with your partner.
There is a lot of advice out there and services that can be acquired. You can buy ebook guides - the one I tried was: http://3daysleeptraining.com/
I found great advice on the Dr. Sears website: http://www.askdrsears.com/html/7/T070300.asp
If you are at your wits end, after having tried everything, you can try a Sleep Doula. This is a more expensive option, but those who have tried on, swear by it. I, too, have hired the services of a sleep doula, and I have to say that the advice I received from her was helpful, but it was also a lot of common sense. If anything, she confirm some things about sleeping that helped put my mind at ease surrounding the technics we were trying. You can hire a sleep doula to come to your house and get your baby used to sleeping through the night - this will cost you much more; but for some parents, this is what is necessary.
Sleep is very important for the development of your little one. Don't give up, keep trying different techniques to get your little one to sleep as much as possible.
